This exhibition gave us a chance to share the stories of Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, Sleater-Kinney, The Gits, 7 Year Bitch, Bratmobile, L7, and Hole, bands that came out of Seattle or were shaped by its sound. Women were not peripheral to grunge, they helped define it. Artists like Tina Bell of Bam Bam laid the groundwork early on, while others pushed the genre forward with a distinct mix of punk energy and feminist perspective, challenging the boundaries of a male-dominated scene. For Women’s History Month, I curated a collection of female-led grunge bands, many of which are currently on view in the gallery.
