In August of 1991, Photographer Chris Cuffaro shot this image of Pearl Jam as one of many promotional materials for the bands’ upcoming album, Ten. This image captures Pearl Jam at Discovery Park in Seattle, right before they gained universal acclaim as one of the greatest grunge acts of their era. Remarking on being able to capture the band in their early days, Cuffaro notes, “I love this shot because it’s a great picture of a band, but also captures who the band was at the time…[they] were still new to this and about to take off.” Cuffaro, who referred to 1991 as the best year for music, claimed he was simply “there at the right time.
