"The Beastie Boys are one of my all-time favorite bands, depending on the day. Adam Yauch was an artistic genius taken way too early. I was lucky enough to see them here in California many times through the years -- starting in 1987 with the Together Forever Tour at Cal Expo in Sacramento and ending in 2007 at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. I feel like this is an iconic statement piece celebrating the early B-boy Beasties. This image was taken just before License To Ill went massive. Huge thanks to Sunny Bak for allowing me to reference her photograph to create my drawing.

... The process: I got sketchy until I was solid on my skeleton, then transferred a faint outline of the drawing to a 300-ply cold press Crescent illustration board. I then went at it using Derwent Graphite pencils H to 9B, soft erasers. and a sharpened electric eraser. I finished it off with a protective coat of archival Krylon fixative." -- Aaron Johnson, artist
