About this photograph
The brooding intensity and spiritual complexity of Johnny Cash is captured in this January, 1960 Columbia Records portrait of the artist. Young and ruggedly handsome, on the threshold of a career that would bring popular and country music together while transforming them both, his eyes shine with the light of deep secret knowledge and the gravitas of an artist who's born to carry the truth in his music.
