About the photographer
Leni Sinclair, a pioneering music photographer and activist, fled communist East Germany at 18 and settled in Detroit, where she studied at Wayne State University. In 1964, she co-founded the Detroit Artists Workshop and began documenting avant-garde jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Deeply involved in the counterculture movement, Sinclair captured iconic images of bands like MC5, Iggy Pop, and the Stooges. Her work has been widely published as album covers, in books, and in major publications.
