On View: August 1 – September 26, 2026
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 1, 2026 | 6–8 pm
Musichead Gallery will present Madonna: The Rise of the Material Girl (1980–1985), an exhibition of early photographs by seven acclaimed photographers, from August 1 through September 26, 2026. Timed to the release of her new album, Confessions II, this presentation traces the origins of the best-selling female artist of all time.
Featuring work from Deborah Feingold, Gary Heery, Jack Lue, Marc Canter, Mark Weiss, Mick Rock, and Richard Corman, the exhibition takes viewers from Madonna's early downtown New York days to the Like a Virgin tour, with candid behind-the-scenes moments, iconic stage performances, and stunning portraits that reveal the instincts that would define her career.
Madonna Louise Ciccone arrived in New York from Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1978 to pursue dance before turning to music. Soon after, she was offered a ready-made pop career in Paris, but rejected the opportunity in favor of creative control and returned to New York. The pattern continued with The Breakfast Club, when she wasn't allowed to become the band's lead singer, she left to do her own thing. Rather than relying on producers to write her hits, she partnered with Stephen Bray to develop her own songs, making authorship central to her career. Instead of waiting for the music industry to discover her, Madonna and Bray brought their demos directly to influential New York club DJs, building demand before major labels took notice. At the same time, she cultivated her visual identity by surrounding herself with artists, designers, photographers, and dancers, treating fashion as an extension of her artistic expression rather than simply a marketing tool. By the time she released Everybody in 1982, Madonna's career was just beginning but her creative philosophy was coming into focus.
Madonna: The Rise of the Material Girl (1980–1985) opens with a public reception on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 6–8 pm. The exhibition is on view through September 26, 2026, Monday to Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm, at Musichead Gallery, 7420 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA, 93065.
