  • This image shows George Carlin in 1976 at the Roxy theater. The Roxy, which was started in 1973 by a mix of big-time record executives, was a historic West Hollywood hub for folk-rock and rock musicians. Neil Young initiated the opening of the Roxy with a three-night run, and the theater would go on to host the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley and Joni Mitchell throughout the seventies. Not much is known about Carlin’s Roxy set; according to the photographer, somebody videotaped the performance, but those tapes were never released. What remains is this contact sheet, which displays the edgy and provocative comic expressing his characteristic energy and charisma.
