    About this photograph

Robbie Robertson planned The Last Waltz as the end of touring, not necessarily the end of The Band. As trouble built within the group, he says, “we’ve gotta deal with this, and we’ve gotta get out of the way to deal with it,” and so the farewell was born. A few days after that Thanksgiving night in 1976, he booked studio time and waited for his bandmates, but they never came. Photograph by Larry Hulst.
