About this photograph
Opening for Screaming Trees, Nirvana tore through a set that bridged their early catalog and emerging material, including “Love Buzz,” “Sliver,” “Dive,” “Breed,” “About A Girl,” “Blew,” and “Lithium.” Mid-set, when Kurt Cobain’s guitar cut out during “Dive,” Krist Novoselic stepped in to carry the guitar part, keeping the momentum intact. Photographs from this performance were later used for artwork on certain pressings of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” linking this club show to the single that would soon redefine their trajectory. Photograph by Charles Peterson.
