About this photograph
This portrait of Miles Davis was taken by Don Hunstein at the 30th Street Studios in New York in July 1958 during the recording of Porgy and Bess. Davis' monumental collaboration with Gil Evans transformed the George Gershwin opera into a cool jazz masterpiece. Davis said that his Porgy and Bess album was one of his all-time personal favorites, as one can see the transcendent satisfaction on his face as he takes a draw from his cigarette and basks in the magic he and Gil created in the air.

About the photographer
Don Hunstein worked as chief staff photographer for Columbia Records for over thirty years. During his time there Hunstein had access to a broad range of musicians from a wide variety of genres. At the time Columbia Records felt it was important to document the cultural history of the music of their time, giving him the opportunity to do more than album covers and publicity shots. Hunstein photographed hundreds of album covers and documented the recording of many of the great albums in music history.
