About this photograph
Photographed by Charles Peterson during the era of L7’s breakthrough release Smell the Magic, this 1990 image captures Sparks at the height of the band’s ascent. A Sub Pop signing from outside the Pacific Northwest, L7 aligned seamlessly with the label’s emerging grunge roster while maintaining their distinctly Los Angeles edge. Peterson recalls, “L7 from Los Angeles were another Sub Pop signing from outside the Pacific Northwest who fit in perfectly with what was going on at Sub Pop. This is at Seattle’s Vogue Tavern in 1990. Guitarist Donita Sparks in full grunge hair glory.”
