Purple Rain is Prince’s sixth studio album, released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records as the soundtrack to the film of the same name. The album features fuller band arrangements and layered production, including guitars, keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines, and other instrumentation, creating a dense, synthesized, and psychedelic sound.

A major commercial milestone, Purple Rain has sold over 25 million copies worldwide and is one of the best-selling albums of all time. Prince and the Revolution earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year and won Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. The album is regularly ranked among the greatest ever made, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry
