About this photograph
This captivating photograph, featured in the gatefold of the Rolling Stones’ 1968 album Beggars Banquet, captures the band gathered in a disheveled dining scene that redefines rock imagery. Shot by Michael Joseph, the setup around the table recalls Luis Buñuel’s Viridiana, where beggars pose around a table, evoking Da Vinci’s The Last Supper. This composition captures an anti-establishment spirit resonant with the album’s themes, blending Bosch and Bruegel’s gritty realism with rock ’n’ roll defiance. An enduring image of rebellion, it marks the Stones’ powerful new era.

About the photographer
Michael Joseph was born in Kimberly, South Africa in 1941. Joseph began photographing his surroundings in reportage style, exposed to political events through his father who was involved in Anti-Apartheid activities. During university, Joseph was sent to Vietnam to photograph the war and was later commissioned to several advertising assignments for companies such as Christies, Pirelli, Schweppes and White Horse. He arrived in London in 1962 and studied at The London College of Printing and Graphic Arts. It was Joseph’s visual style and technical capabilities which made him the photographer of choice for ‘Beggars Banquet’.
