About this album
The River is Bruce Springsteen’s fifth studio album, released as a double LP on October 17, 1980, by Columbia Records. Intended to capture the E Street Band’s live sound, the album was co-produced by Springsteen, Jon Landau, and Steven Van Zandt. Recording took place in New York City from March 1979 to August 1980. Originally conceived as a single album titled The Ties That Bind for release in 1979, the project was shelved when Springsteen felt it didn’t match his vision.
