Elliott Landy spent a year photographing The Band as they created Music from Big Pink and The Band, documenting the musicians at home and around Woodstock, New York. As a friend trusted by the group, Landy had an intimate access that allowed him to photograph The Band beyond the stage, capturing the people, places and relationships surrounding the music.
This two-volume collection brings together nearly 400 photographs from 1968 and 1969, tracing a formative period in the life of a group that helped reconnect rock with its roots through country, blues, gospel, folk and early rock and roll. From the salmon-colored house known as Big Pink to the surrounding Woodstock landscape, Landy’s photographs place the music within the world where it was created.
The result is a photographic record of The Band at a defining moment, as five musicians developed a sound built on collaboration, distinct voices and a shared commitment to the song.
