Fashioning Bowie: A Visual Archive from 1969-2001
Exhibition Dates: January 8 – March 1, 2025
Gallery Hours: 10 am - 6 pm
Step into the expressive world of David Bowie with Fashioning Bowie: A Visual Archive from 1969 to 2001, a captivating photography exhibition celebrating the evolution of a true icon in music and style. This exhibition showcases over 30 striking images by 13 renowned photographers, capturing the looks, eras, and styles that defined Bowie’s unparalleled presence.
From the glittering glam of Ziggy Stardust to the spiritual contemplation of Heathen, Bowie’s boundary-pushing visual identity shaped and reshaped culture as much as his music. Fashioning Bowie offers a rare glimpse into the transformative artistry behind his persona, presenting Bowie not only as a musician but as a masterful curator of his own mythology.
Highlights include Fernando Aceves’ photograph of Bowie in front of Diego Rivera’s mural at Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes. Taken during Bowie’s 1997 Earthling tour, this image vividly captures the artist as he seamlessly merges with Rivera’s masterpiece. As Aceves recalls, “Suddenly his figure seemed to merge into the painting, and I was able to confirm why he is also known as ‘The Chameleon.’” Visitors will witness Bowie’s transformation over three decades, as his style influenced and reflected the changing cultural landscapes of fashion, art, and music.
Join us as we celebrate the bold, visionary spirit of David Bowie through the lens of some of the world’s most talented photographers. Fashioning Bowie: A Visual Archive from 1969 to 2001 promises an unforgettable journey into the ever-changing world of a true cultural icon.
