About this photograph
On September 16, 1991, Nirvana planned an in-store event at Beehive Records, which was selling the first copies of the band’s second album, Nevermind, days before the official release. The turnout was expected to be around 50 people, but hundreds were seen lining up outside the store, hours before the event. When Kurt Cobain saw the line outside of the store, he uttered, “holy shit,” realizing the band’s popularity. By the time Nirvana played, the store was packed solid and a scene of utter chaos, with fans crowd surfing over the record stacks. Photograph by Charles Peterson.
