About this photograph
The Screaming Trees were pivotal pioneers of the early 1990s grunge movement, blending psychedelic rock with hard-hitting, moody, and folk-infused grunge. Often cited as "Godfathers of Grunge," they were critical to the Pacific Northwest sound. Bassist Van Conner reflects on the band’s multi-genre sound: “There was no scene the Trees came out of. Four misfits in Ellensburg who didn't fit in anywhere and didn't fit in with each other. But we were all just really into weird music. The whole thing about the Trees, even though I was a musician and my brother was a musician and our drummer was, we didn't understand that you're supposed to be one genre, so we just did whatever came out.” Photograph by Charles Peterson.
