Lance Mercer is a Seattle-based photographer known for his defining images of the Pacific Northwest music scene. He began photographing at 13 and, after earning a degree in commercial photography, became a full-time freelancer in 1991.
Emerging alongside Seattle’s rising underground, Mercer documented artists who would come to shape a generation, including Malfunkshun, Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. From 1992 to 1995, he toured internationally as Pearl Jam’s official photographer, producing an intimate visual record of the band’s formative years.
His work has appeared in leading publications such as Rolling Stone, Spin, and Vanity Fair. Mercer is the co-author of Place/Date (1997) with Charles Peterson, and the author of 5X1: Pearl Jam Through the Eye of Lance Mercer (2007).
Today, he continues to work across music, editorial, commercial, and documentary photography, with projects published and exhibited internationally.
