Lynn Goldsmith

Lynn Goldsmith is a multi-disciplinary artist, and one of the first female rock and roll photographers. Goldsmith has done over 100 album covers, and her work over the past 50 years in the editorial world has appeared on the covers of Life, Newsweek, Time, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, National Geographic Traveler, Sports Illustrated, Interview, and The New Yorker. In addition to her editorial work, Goldsmith has also focused on fine art photography with conceptual images. Her art is in the permanent collection of both the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art.

From starting a photo agency to recording music under the name Will Powers, Goldsmith’s creativity knows few boundaries or limitations. The depth of Goldsmith’s artistry is evident in her rock and roll portraits, as she captures musicians both on and off stage with equal amounts of intimacy and intensity. Goldsmith photographed music giants like Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, and Patti Smith, at a time when women music photographers were a novelty. Our curated selection of her photos show her subjects both posed and on the street, on stage and in their homes. Whether it’s Miles Davis peeking through his trumpet, or Prince fiercely clutching his guitar, Goldsmith’s images reveal her subjects in moments of both power and vulnerability.
